Aerial Video of York on Christmas Day

I’ve been planning this one for a while. York is normally packed full of people so a lot of this film wouldn’t normally be possible without being a bit dangerous and being bothered by people getting in the way all the time.

I live in the city centre and last Christmas I noted that the city was pretty much deserted when I went for a walk. So this year I thought I’d take advantage of the empty streets and parks and get some good aerial shots, both of famous landmarks and places that locals will recognize.

York residents who’ve already seen the video commented on how beautiful the town looks, but how it looks so odd being empty in the middle of the day. I probably saw about 30 people in a few hours, where I’d normally see about 100,000.

There is a bit of wobbly jello effect, but this wasn’t a pro job. I only used my lightweight Droidworx CX quadcopter with Gopro Hero 3 Black Edition on an Arris gimbal. It’s safer than bigger equipment, and also meant I could easily carry it from place to place and quickly get some footage before moving onto the next site. I did 6 flights to make this video, each around 7 or 8 minutes.

I also tried the camera in Protune then used the Gopro software to colour correct it afterwards. I can’t really tell if it’s any better than the normal video recording?
